Mina missed the 8:32 by enough time to watch its red taillights turn the corner.
Mr. Vale and Mina sit beside a monitor showing two one-star reviews: “LOCKED ITS DOORS EARLY. DIDN’T LET US IN.” and “FOLLOWED US THROUGH THE AISLES. MADE US FEAR FOR OUR SAFETY.”
The next morning, two new one-star reviews filled Mr. Vale's monitor.
The camera showed Mina unlocking the door at 8:06. For twenty minutes, she kept several yards between them. At 8:26, they left.
Mr. Vale turns a Golden Pear Market ratings dashboard toward Mina; the screen shows the store’s rating falling and a chart of declining monthly scores.
“These make eight.”
“Those were untrue too.”
“Eight looks like a pattern.”
“Eight lies also look like eight.”
